The short answer

Which licenses can treat Veterans and families in New Jersey?
The independent counselor license in New Jersey is the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), issued by the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee. Licensed Associate Counselors (LAC) practice under supervision, and ValorWell isn't working with supervised clinicians right now. Licensed marriage and family therapists, independently licensed clinical social workers, and licensed psychologists in New Jersey also qualify, under the titles New Jersey uses.
For telehealth, the license has to match where the client is sitting during the session. To see a client located in New Jersey, you need a New Jersey license or a valid compact privilege. See Can Therapists See Telehealth Clients in Another State?
Can you practice in New Jersey through a compact?
- Counseling Compact: New Jersey has enacted the compact but wasn't yet listed as issuing privileges as of October 2026. Until it does, counselors need a New Jersey license.
- PSYPACT: New Jersey participates, so psychologists with PSYPACT authority can practice telepsychology with clients located there.
- Social Work Licensure Compact: New Jersey has enacted it, but the compact isn't issuing multistate licenses yet.
Compact status changes often. See Counseling Compact, PSYPACT, and the Social Work Compact and the Counseling Compact map.

Important limits
- Need isn't a referral guarantee. Volume depends on client eligibility, authorizations, and fit.
- Fully licensed only. Associates and prescribers aren't a fit right now.
- Check the board. License titles and rules can change; the state board is the authority.
