The direct answer
For a family's first PCS after initial military training, the right sequence is to confirm the service member's official orders and reporting instructions, obtain transportation counseling, select the authorized moving method, and make a separate plan for childcare and arrival. A projected training graduation or hoped-for leave is not proof of an approved travel schedule. Do not book costly services or move household goods based only on informal expectations. Entitlements and leave depend on the specific orders, service and circumstances.
This guide covers first-move logistics rather than the emotional adjustment addressed in ValorWell's separate PCS-isolation resource.
Orders and leave: two different approvals
Orders establish the authorized assignment and reporting instructions. Military OneSource cautions that a PCS notification is not sufficient to schedule an official household goods shipment: the family generally needs actual orders. Time between training and the next report date, permission to take leave, when dependents may travel, and who pays for travel should be checked with the service member's personnel office and command. Do not assume an automatic amount of leave after basic or occupational training; graduation dates and individual circumstances can change. Ask the gaining unit when to report, whether arrival arrangements are set, and who can clarify family travel questions. Make a backup schedule that works even if the service member cannot help with every moving day.
Government shipment, full PPM, or partial PPM
A government-arranged household goods move uses the military moving system. In a personally procured move (PPM, often called DITY), the family arranges transport or hires its own mover and must satisfy the applicable counseling, approval and documentation rules. A partial PPM combines a government shipment with eligible items transported personally. A PPM is not simply a promise that every receipt will be reimbursed. Ask the originating transportation office to explain approved weight, how the estimated incentive is calculated, excluded expenses, required full and empty weight tickets, how to document professional gear, and where and when to submit the claim. Military OneSource warns not to move or store goods before official orders if expecting PCS reimbursement. Keep copies of approvals, weight tickets, receipts and inventory. Confirm specific reimbursement rules for the service and order type before committing money.
Sponsor, housing, healthcare, and children
Request a sponsor through the gaining unit; if no sponsor has been assigned, the gaining installation's Military and Family Support Center or relocation office can help. Ask where to report, what lodging/housing processes apply, and which local schools and childcare resources to contact. Use Military OneSource's Plan My Move for a date-based checklist, and keep birth certificates, dependent identification, prescriptions, insurance information, essential childcare supplies, and important records with the family rather than in an inaccessible shipment. Confirm family healthcare arrangements and provider continuity during relocation. A separate family support plan should identify who handles the move if the service member's report date, approved leave, or transportation changes.
Common mistakes: assuming projected leave is approved; moving belongings before receiving qualifying orders; failing to obtain weight tickets for a PPM; and treating a sponsor's suggestions as official entitlement decisions. Verify travel and pay with personnel/finance, shipments with transportation, and provider or health-plan matters with the relevant healthcare system.
First-PCS sequence
- Obtain official orders and verify dependent/travel instructions. 2. Confirm reporting, leave and family travel with the appropriate military offices. 3. Complete transportation counseling and decide on the authorized move type. 4. Collect PPM approvals and full/empty weight tickets where applicable. 5. Request a sponsor, housing and school information. 6. Plan backup childcare and keep essential documents and medicines accessible. 7. After the move, follow the transportation office's claim, damage-report and reimbursement procedures.
